Chicago Bears Mock Draft: Big trade addresses WR, Bears add a QB
By Ryan Heckman
With the number seven overall pick, the Bears grab their cornerstone edge rusher in Clemson’s Myles Murphy. A season after getting rid of Khalil Mack and then moving on from Robert Quinn, the Bears overhauled their defensive line. Now, they enter the future with guys like Dominique Robinson and Travis Gipson as some nice rotational pieces who could even be qualified as average starters.
But, Murphy gives them their ace. Not only is Murphy an athletic freak at 6-foot-4 with a rare blend of size and speed, but he’s also received excellent praise for who he is as a person. This is a guy Matt Eberflus would be proud to draft, and someone who could become a leader on this defense.
Last year with Clemson, Murphy finished with 11.0 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks just a year after having even better numbers (14.0 tackles for loss and 8.0 sacks in 2021). Murphy is as versatile an edge defender as they come and becomes a big part of the defense right away.
With their first pick in the second round at no. 38, the Bears take one of the top available tackles left in Tennessee’s Darnell Wright. This begins what will end up being a total transformation up front. The Bears will likely keep Braxton Jones as one of their starters, with the other four positions up for grabs.
Wright’s best attribute is the fact that he’s great in pass protection and can do it from either side. He has experience playing both left and right tackle, so if Jones needed to switch over to the right side for comfortability, Wright would have no problem playing on the left.
Wright and Jones give the Bears two strong anchors on the end of the line, and from here, they can continue building the interior.
