Did the Chicago Bears make a mistake by not hiring Brian Daboll?
By Todd Welter
It would have been hard getting Daboll to the Bears once the Giants hired Schoen to be the general manager.
Poles probably could not compete with Daboll having a prior working relationship with Schoen. They both helped build the Buffalo Bills into an AFC contender. A tank season might also be something Daboll would not want to be associated with.
Although, it is not like there was a ton of hope that the Giants would make the playoffs before the season began. At the same time, having two top-10 picks while working with someone you have a past relationship with is probably a more appealing situation.
The other mitigating factor was Chicago replaced a supposed offensive guru in Matt Nagy with a defensive-minded coach. The Bears had gone through the perils of dealing with an offensive coach too focused on his offense that he did address the other issues around him. Maybe the thought of another potential Nagy-like situation was too much to bear.
Daboll could end up being like Nagy with the only difference being Daboll won his first playoff game. Remember, Nagy was coach of the year in 2018 and it was all downhill from there.
Still, it would have been interesting to see how Justin Fields would have developed this season under Daboll’s tutelage. Daboll might have adjusted to Fields’ strengths much earlier in the season than Eberflus did. Daboll had a track record of developing mobile quarterbacks. His work with Jones is showing that maybe Daboll is a legit quarterback whisperer.
It will always remain a what-if though. Only time will tell if the Chicago Bears made a mistake.
