3 tech, 3 tech, 3 tech and more 3 tech. Bears fans know how crucial the 3 technique position is to this style of defense.

“[3 technique] is the engine that makes everything go” were Eberflus’s exact words when asked about the position’s importance.

Meet contestant number 3 to fill that position, Dre’Mont Jones. Jones has made a living intruding gaps and making plays in the backfield.

He consistently wins with fast hands, quickness and ability to be slippery. This exactly why he should be alluring for the Bears

Now, for not being the tallest guy in the world, Jones doesn’t play with great leverage. He is not a two gapper who holds the line of scrimmage.

His run defense is why he is not higher on the list. The splash plays are awesome but when he isn’t making them, he can be a liability. He gets moved off the ball too much.

Jones still has a lot favorable qualities to be this team’s 3tech. His shortcomings might prevent the Bears from viewing him as “the guy” if they value the position as much as they say they do.

I assume he will warrant starter money but a season ending hip injury could make his pay day projection murky.
