Chicago Bears players with much to play for in final two weeks: David Montgomery, RB

David Montgomery has been a mainstay in the Bears offense for the past four seasons. On a team that has been anything but consistent on the offensive side of the ball, Montgomery has been exactly that: consistent.

But, these days we don’t often see running backs get paid top dollar. Heck, not many last past their rookie deal with the team they began with. Montgomery, though, has become a fan favorite and a guy that Chicago can depend on.

With Khalil Herbert back and healthy, many would assume he could get the lead role next season as Montgomery enters free agency. He’s proven to have plenty of juice and has just a bit of a higher gear than Montgomery does when he gets through the line of scrimmage.

Still, an offense without Montgomery is tough to imagine. These two have been a phenomenal one-two punch together over the last season and a half. But, backs are replaceable. That’s the sad truth.

Montgomery needs to show the Bears he is worth keeping after this year. Fans would love it. Teammates would love it. But, will he prove worthy of a second contract playing the league’s most replaceable position?
