The team could get a lesser packager for Patrick Kane and it would still be good.

There is a slight chance that a world exists where teams heading to the playoffs don’t want to give up assets in order to land a rental player. Especially when the rental player is a big name making over 10 million dollars and having a down year by his standards.

That isn’t likely because it is pretty obvious why Kane is having a down year but you just never know. The Hawks need to be ready in case the offers that they receive for Kane aren’t exactly elite. That won’t mean that they aren’t getting a really good return for him anyway.

Instead of a first-round pick, the Hawks could still do a lot of damage with more second-round picks in their pocket. Again, Davidson believes that he can make great picks for this team in the draft. If that is the best pick they can get for Kane, it is still better than nothing.

Simon Holmstrom is a player that is trying to take advantage of his talent in the NHL. New York selected him in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2019 NHL Draft. He has played in seven NHL games (all this year) and has just one assist. He is trying to learn how to put it all together.

Holmstrom might be worth the risk as are all of the other players involved in these trades. Trading a player like Patrick Kane is hard but it is something that must be done to help the franchise move forward. We’ll see if they can do it.
