The great and the bad in the Chicago Bears victory over the Texans
By Todd Welter
Quarterback Justin Fields was bad.
Fields described his performance as trash. For the second straight game, Fields was terrible.
He completed eight of 17 passes for 106 yards. He was sacked five times and had a 27.7 passer rating. Fields was picked off twice by rookie safety Jalen Pitre.
Fields is not inspiring confidence that he is the long-term answer at quarterback for a team that has not had a legit franchise quarterback since 1950.
Through three games, Fields has completed just 51.1% of his passes. He has thrown for just 297 yards and if he plays at this rate, he will finish the year with just 1683 yards.
Part of Fields’ problem is the play calling has been run-heavy. The offensive line is not consistently giving him time to throw. His wide receivers have had some issues getting open. Although, the pass blocking and wide receivers have not been horrible like some initially feared.
Fields is also still showing his rookie problems by holding on to the ball way too long which causes him to get sacked or miss receivers when they do get open. He is still having trouble with his accuracy.
He missed badly on both his throws that were intercepted by Pitre.
Fields was playing a pass defense that was ranked 27th in the league. The Texans left Soldier Field as the 11th best pass defense.
His play has been a cause for concern.
Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy has been calling a conservative offense. Part of that is the Chicago Bears’ offensive line has been great at run blocking. Montgomery and Herbert have been a really good one-two punch in the backfield.
The lack of pass plays has called into question whether Getsy trusts Fields or not. Fields is on pace to attempt just 255 passes this year.
Fields threw for 70 yards against Green Bay and then followed it with this performance is not exactly something that inspires trust. Especially since he is continuing to not get the ball out on time. It is something head coach Matt Eberflus wants Fields to work on.
Fields has now made 13 career NFL starts. He still has only shown flashes of his immense potential. Fields is still early in his career so it is not time to throw out the bust label. If he continues to play like this, then the Bears may be looking to go in a different direction at quarterback.
Fields’ poor game made this victory feel like a loss in a way. Hopefully, he can bounce back and start putting together some good games. No matter what the score is, that happening would make it feel like a win.
