4 things to watch for when the Chicago Bears host the Houston Texans
By Todd Welter
Darnell Mooney and Cole Kmet need to get more involved.
Mooney has just two catches for four yards to start the season. He had -4 yards against Green Bay. That is right folks, Darnell Mooney literally turned in a negative performance.
Kmet has been even worse in the passing game. He has more drops (one) than catches (zero). The more bewildering part is that they have seven total targets combined.
Mooney and Kmet were supposed to be featured players in the offense. Instead, they have been erased in the first two games.
To be fair to Kmet, he has been asked to block a lot more than go out for passes. Still, the times he has run a route and found himself open, Fields has either chosen another target or Kmet has dropped the ball or not been where Fields expected him to be.
Mooney is having trouble getting open and adjusting to being the number one wide receiver. In a perfect world, Mooney is the number two receiver who can enjoy benefiting from single coverage because he has a legit number one receiver getting all the attention. The Bears’ front office believed Mooney could develop into a featured target.
So far, he has not rewarded their faith. The lack of pass attempts has played a role in Mooney and Kmet not impacting the offense. If the Bears are going to have any success through the air, they need to scheme some ways to get Mooney and Kmet the ball.
Although, it might be time to accept that Kmet might just be a good blocking tight end and nothing more. He can erase some doubts about his pass-catching ability by showing he can be effective on the field against the Texans.
Kyler Gordon needs to bounce back from a bad game at Green Bay
This year’s second-round pick got picked on by Aaron Rodgers. The Packers did not throw Jaylon Johnson’s way. Instead, they went after the rookie and he got beat badly in coverage.
Gordon is a rookie, so he will get picked on a lot this season. The cornerback needs to bounce back from that awful night in Green Bay. Especially since Kindle Vildor is not doing much as the other outsider corner.
Gordon needs to make sure he is at least not giving up inside leverage to the wide receiver. He needs to show he cannot get beat off the line. Those two things were very apparent in Green Bay.
Picking off Mills one or two times would be a nice way to make up for last Sunday.
