The Chicago White Sox came into the 2022 season with high hopes that they would be in contention for an American League title. Since then, the year has been nothing but an up-and-down roller coaster. Things have never been consistently good or consistently bad.

As a result, they enter their Saturday night matchup at .500 with a 63-63 record. There are plenty of worse teams out there but they didn’t come in expecting t win the World Series. It has been as much of a disaster as it possibly could be based on the expectations.

This game on Saturday is going to be very telling for them. They are facing a very good pitcher in Merrill Kelly who is 10-5 with a 2.87 ERA. Davis Martin is going to get the start for the White Sox in place of Michael Kopech who is on the 15-day Injured List.

If the White Sox do end up missing the playoffs, there need to be changes made. For one, it starts with the owner. Jerry Reinsdorf went above everyone and hired his friend Tony La Russa to be the new manager of the team after they fired Rick Renteria. It was a big mistake.

The Chicago White Sox have a lot of people that deserve blame for 2022.

Tony deserves a lot of the blame. He has made some very bad decisions all season long. He was once the greatest manager in the game but he isn’t what he once was with today’s game. He was supposed to be someone who helped this team take the next step but that hasn’t happened.

Rick Hahn also deserves a lot of the blame. There are a lot of players who aren’t very good on defense playing out of position which is not what winning teams do. He didn’t make the necessary upgrades needed to the roster after what was a very promising 2021 season.

Almost every coach also deserves some blame as well. Joe McEwing is the worst third-base coach in the league. He doesn’t do a good job helping the White Sox make good choices on the base paths at all. He needs to be replaced as soon as possible.

Frank Menechino has been a major issue this season. He is the White Sox hitting coach so he deserves a lot of blame for their very bad approach to hitting. They hit a lot of singles well but they add no power to the mix. Their stagnant offense is really hurting them.

Last but not least, the players need to be better too. A lot of people are having career-worst years all at the same time. There are a lot of players on this team that need to take good looks at themselves in the mirror this offseason.

From here on out, we can only hope that the White Sox do what is needed to get them ready for a strong 2023 season. Beyond that, this team’s future is blurry. Changes need to be made on all fronts.
