3 things the Chicago Bears must do vs. Chiefs in preseason opener
By Ryan Heckman
2. Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus needs to get great looks from his starting secondary
Similar to the offense, Eberflus’ defense has plenty of new faces, particularly a couple of rookies in the secondary. Jaquan Brisker should get a good quarter and a half, at least, if not the entire first half.
Kyler Gordon, meanwhile, should get similar run. The only difference with Gordon is the fact that he should get looks inside and outside like he has in camp. While many assumed Gordon would come in as a strictly outside corner, Eberflus wants to ensure he gets guys in the best position to succeed. So, we should see Gordon playing in multiple spots.
The mentality from Eberflus and defensive coordinator Alan Williams should be to play the starting secondary the entire first half if need be, but to get guys in the right positions.
Fans should look for an invigorated, re-energized Eddie Jackson as well. His mannerisms and energy on the field will speak volumes to how the rest of the year could go. This secondary could be the best area of the defense, if they all hit their potential.
Fans want to see Gordon, Brisker, Jackson and Jaylon Johnson play well together. We want to see some big plays, if possible, but all in all excellent coverage and cohesiveness.
