Saturday afternoon, for a few hours, all of the craziness and rumors this week will come to an end. The Chicago Bears open their 2022 preseason against the Kansas City Chiefs, and fans get their first look at Matt Eberflus’ new-look squad.

This week, of course, has been dominated by headlines involving All Pro linebacker Roquan Smith.

Earlier in the week, Smith publicly requested a trade out of Chicago due to contract disputes. Saturday, though, all of the talk will quiet for just a bit.

Saturday is an important day for a lot of people, namely Eberflus and new general manager Ryan Poles. Eberflus has publicly stated that he’ll play his starters a good amount in the preseason, too, so fans have much to look forward to.

After a ho-hum offseason, fans will get to see if the Chicago Bears can take a step forward in their preseason opener.

The likelihood we see Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce much against the Bears is slim to none, so all eyes will be on Justin Fields, David Montgomery and Darnell Mooney, among others.

Poles did not help this team a whole lot, in terms of adding playmakers around Fields, and now we’ll see if this young quarterback has what it takes to elevate those around him. It won’t be an easy task, but this is where his development has to take another step, no matter what.

While fans are simply happy to see Bears football again, this is ultimately just the preseason. So, “it doesn’t matter.”

However, there are plenty of things we want to see out of this Bears team in a relatively, otherwise, meaningless game. We begin with the offense.
