White Sox: Tony La Russa’s response to Johnny Cueto is strange
The Chicago White Sox are one of the most disappointing teams in Major League Baseball so far this season. However, they are still very much in the race for the top of the American League Central Division with the Cleveland Guardians and Minnesota Twins.
One of the biggest focal points of every White Sox conversation has been manager Tony La Russa. He has had an awful season as White Sox manager and can only salvage it by getting this team into the playoffs and winning a round. If that doesn’t happen, the year is a failure.
After a very annoying loss on Wednesday night, starting pitcher Johnny Cueto went to the media and told them that the team needed to play with fire and fight in their game. He also implied that he isn’t sure if they have any fire left which is rather disturbing.
A day later, right before their series finale with the Kansas City Royals, La Russa was asked about it. He went on to tell everyone that he isn’t sure what would make Cueto say something like that. He then went on to list all of the reasons that he disagrees with that assessment.
Tony La Russa isn’t doing the best job managing the 2022 Chicago White Sox.
To Tony’s credit, he did say that Cueto has been around a while and his opinion carries some weight but he clearly didn’t agree. The problem with not agreeing with it is that Cueto is so clearly right. All you have to do to see it is watch a White Sox game.
La Russa also said that these things are better to be kept “within the family” which is another wild statement. There were a few instances in 2021 where Tony let things out to the media, just ask Yermin Mercedes. He should stick to his word if that is the way that he wants things handled.
It is pretty obvious that the White Sox needs a change in a lot of different areas. They need to fix their offense and they need a new manager. There are many ways to do this but it is probably more likely to get underway in the offseason. Hopefully, whatever the issue is that made Cueto say that is addressed soon.
