A lot is happening with the Chicago Cubs these days. They traded four relievers at the trade deadline but kept Willson Contreras and Ian Happ which is unlike what everyone else thought they would do this year.

Now, some even bigger news has been revealed as the Cubs announced that Jason Heyward is going to be let go after this season with one year left on his deal. He is injured and won’t play for the rest of the season but the team will keep him around because he is a beloved human being.

This is a strange time to announce that but Jed Hoyer’s way of doing things has been strange since the start of his tenure fully in charge of the lineup.

There is no doubt that Jason Heyward’s tenure with the Chicago Cubs has had its ups and downs. The stats will say that it was mostly down but there were a few moments that happened for him that people will remember forever.

His biggest moment as a Chicago Cubs player came in the 2016 World Series. with a 108-year drought in jeopardy, the Cubs blew a late lead to the Cleveland Indians so the game went into extra innings. Then, the rain delay happened.

The Chicago Cubs got what they needed from Jason Heyward’s tenure.

During the rain delay, Heyward took matters into his own hands. He delivered a speech that got the Cubs going again and ready to go once the game stopped. They were able to get it done in a memorable fashion and the World Series drought was over.

It was obvious that they wouldn’t win the World Series without him. Every single one of his teammates enjoyed his presence and he made everyone feel comfortable. Even though he didn’t live up to his big contract in terms of stats, he lived up to it in other ways.

Heyward’s career is certainly not over. However, the best years are certainly in the past. A team that brings him in has to know exactly what they are getting. He is still okay in the outfield but not a Gold Glove winner anymore. He is, however, always going to be a great dude.

No matter what, Heyward is always going to bring out good memories for Cubs fans. You can hope that they will send him out the right way by honoring him but it is pretty obvious that they are going to. Hopefully, he has success in whatever is next for him.
