Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields sees sneaky WR emerging in camp
By Ryan Heckman
The second week of Chicago Bears training camp is about to come to a close, and thus far we have seen a lot of moving parts from this roster in flux.
Head coach Matt Eberflus and his staff have been tasked with putting together a starting offensive line while sorting through several options in the process. Also on the offensive side, though, the coaches are attempting to figure out which wide receivers can step up and play a big role next to Darnell Mooney.
Very early in the free agency period, the Bears brought in a former player of offensive coordinator Luke Getsy from Green Bay, Equanimeous St. Brown.
Rarely used with the Packers, St. Brown is a Notre Dame product whom Bears fans are very familiar with after having watched him close to home during his college career. He was originally viewed as maybe an end-of-roster type of guy, but two weeks into camp, St. Brown may be turning into more than that.
Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields is noticing big things from veteran wideout Equanimeous St. Brown.
"“He’s been in this offense for a number of years, so he really doesn’t make mistakes when it comes to running the plays and stuff like that. He’s definitely always in the right spot and knows where to be on certain plays. He’s a weapon in this offense for sure.” (Via NBC Sports Chicago)"
Take every training camp report with a grain of salt, but this is definitely a player worth monitoring. St. Brown was brought over because of his relationship with Luke Getsy and obviously having known the offense. His knowledge, alone, was always going to help the other guys learn.
But, he’s becoming one of Fields’ favorite targets during training camp. On a team that’s got a wide receiver room up for grabs, St. Brown appears to be taking full advantage and looks to finally become a staple in the NFL.
“He’s a weapon in this offense for sure.”
The best-case scenario for the Bears, is that St. Brown continues to blossom into the number two wide receiver next to Mooney. This Bears offense needs a true, big-framed target like St. Brown because other than him, there aren’t a lot of guys with size.
At 6-foot-5, St. Brown could be a legitimate red zone threat and also one who could become a problem outside the hash marks.
It’s not only Fields who is noticing the impact St. Brown has made. But, head coach Matt Eberflus has taken notice as well.
"“He’s a pro and he’s always on it, you know, with the details. I’ve spent some time in the receivers’ room as of late, in the position meetings, and he’s certainly one of the big leaders in that group, coaching the guys and leading that way and then he exhibits that on the field too with his play and how he hustles and how he executes.”"
To be relishing this opportunity on his second NFL team has to feel extremely fulfilling for St. Brown, who was more of a castoff in Green Bay.
If he continues to excel and improve, St. Brown might just be the steal of free agency for this Bears team.
