With around an hour to go, there are rumors going around about every team in Major League Baseball. The Chicago Cubs came in expected to be one of the most active sellers in the league as they are completely rebuilding.

One of the names that are expected to go is Willson Contreras. As you probably know, Contreras is one of the best catchers in the league.  He was the starting catcher for the National League All-Stars this year. That was expected to be his last big moment with the Cubs.

Before that moment, Contreras was a Cubs fan favorite anyway and someone who was there when they won the World Series in 2016. That championship ended a 108-year drought so they are all going to naturally be legends in town forever.

Trading a guy like that is hard but sometimes necessary. However, it now sounds like the Cubs could keep him. Robert Murray of FanSided noted on Twitter that there is a chance that he stays. That would be one of the more shocking things to happen on deadline day.

The Chicago Cubs could end up keeping Willson Contreras for the rest of the year.

If they keep him for the rest of the year, they can try to re-sign him or extend a qualifying offer (if he declines they will get a draft pick). It is a risk but it does seem like Contreras would love to stick with the only club that he has ever played for. Now there is a chance.

It is smart to note that both Willson Contreras and Ian Happ are in the Chicago Cubs’ starting lineup for Tuesday night. That doesn’t mean that they can’t be traded but they are preparing as if they are not. There is still just under an hour left before the deadline comes and goes.

This is a big move for the Chicago Cubs. If they keep him, it could go one of two ways as previously mentioned. If they move him, they might be able to get some really nice young prospects with the future in mind.

If they don’t trade Contreras, that doesn’t mean that they won’t still move Happ or other relievers. It is going to be a wild finish before everyone puts their pencils down at 5 PM Central Time.
