The Chicago Cubs were expected to make a lot of trades on Tuesday before the trade deadline. Willson Contreras and Ian Happ were supposed to be dealt as they were the biggest trade chips on the team. Each of them was All-Stars but now it looks like they are staying.

They did make one last trade before the deadline, however, as they sent right-handed reliever Mychal Givens to the New York Mets. He is the fourth reliever that the Cubs have traded away over the last week or so leading up to the deadline.

It isn’t the trade you’d expect to hear from the Cubs at the deadline but it is the one. The Cubs are trying to make their farm system better as they look to rebuild the roster and get back into contention. Trading all of these relievers is a pretty good way to do that.

The San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers may have something to say about it but the New York Mets are one of the legit threats in the National League. It is going to be interesting to see how far they can go but Givens can certainly help them.

Mychal Givens has been traded away by the Chicago Cubs at the buzzer.

So far this season on a very bad Cubs team, he has a record of 6-2 out of their pen with a 2.66 ERA and a WHIP of 1.254. He also has 51 strikeouts in 40.2 innings pitched. All of those stats are very nice as the Mets look to bolster their bullpen.

So far, this deadline has been a bit confusing for the Cubs. They were so obviously going to trade their two All-Stars until it wasn’t as obvious. They did do well getting rid of their relievers which had a tremendous amount of value. That was smart but it is really a strange situation.

The trade deadline is now over and the roster that you see is going to be the roster that you get. The Cubs are going to have a rough stretch to the finish but they are going to do everything they can to extend Contreras now that he is staying.

For now, seeing Givens (and the other relievers traded) play on contenders will have to do for Chicago Cubs fans.
