The Chicago Cubs already made two trades in the week leading up to the 2022 MLB Trade Deadline and they both involved relief pitchers. It took a minute but they finally made their first trade on the actual deadline day and it also involved a relief pitcher.

The Cubs traded David Robertson to the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies are a team that currently sits with a record of 55-47. They are in third place in the National League East but are one of the many teams battling for a playoff spot via the Wild Card.

It will be a much better situation for Robertson. The Chicago Cubs are going nowhere and the Phillies will play some meaningful baseball for the rest of the season. It isn’t as good as if they traded him to a team that is a lock for the playoffs but it is much better than the Cubs right now.

Ben Brown is the prospect that is returning to the Cubs in exchange for Robertson. He is a right-handed pitcher that is currently ranked as the 26th best prospect in the Phillies system. He was just promoted from high-A to AA recently so he is certainly ascending.

The Chicago Cubs need to keep adding young arms like this for their veteran assets. If one of the few of them turns out to be something great, they will be looked at as winners. With some of the talent that Ben Brown has, there is certainly a chance that he can be one of those guys.

Robertson was probably number three on the Cubs’ “assets to trade” list so that domino is gone. Ian Happ and Willson Contreras are going to be the next to go as they are the two biggest chips that the Cubs have. The rest of the trade deadline is certainly going to be interesting for them.

David Robertson should be proud of what he did for the Cubs this season. He bounced back after a couple of tough years in a row and now he earned the Cubs a top-30 organization prospect. Hopefully, he keeps the success going with his new team.
