The Chicago Cubs made some big moves ahead of the 2022 MLB Trade Deadline. They traded four relievers over the past couple of days and got some really nice prospects for them. However, they didn’t make the two moves that everyone was sort of expecting them to make.

Both Ian Happ and Willson Contreras are going to be sticking with the Chicago Cubs for the rest of this season. That is one of the biggest stories of the entire season as they will have both of them on their roster that is going nowhere this year.

Instead of trading them away for prospects, they are going to see what happens at the conclusion of this season. It is going to be the biggest thing to watch during the offseason when that time comes.

Happ has that extra year of control so they will go over this whole thing with him again. He will certainly be of interest to a lot of teams once it is time to start thinking about 2023. The Cubs just have to hope that he continues to hit as well as he has.

The Chicago Cubs have decided to keep both Willson Contreras and Ian Happ.

Willson Contreras is where things get interesting. He is a free agent at the end of this season. The Cubs can qualify him and see if he accepts it. If he does, he will make around 20 million dollars and stick around for at least a year.

If he declines it, the Cubs will get a draft pick if he signed elsewhere. The other option is to see if he will finally sign an extension. The Cubs fans probably want that but they better make sure that they will be competitive again during his time there. That is not a lock to happen.

This is extra interesting because of what happened over the last few weeks. These two have been on a goodbye tour for the better part of the last week and that is partially why everyone thought they were done in Chicago.

We don’t know what the future holds for them now but all of that was for not as they will at minimum finish out this year o the north side.
