The Chicago Cubs have their first trade of deadline week
The Chicago Cubs are one of the hot teams to talk about going into the 2022 MLB Trade Deadline and it has nothing to do with the fact that they are 6-1 in their last seven games. It is because before that they were so bad that they are now sellers at the deadline.
There are a lot of names that are out there as big-time trade targets so it was only a matter of time before the first move was made. On Saturday, the Chicago Cubs traded reliever Chris Martin to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In the bullpen, the Cubs have a few different relievers that are on the block and Martin gets the distinction of the first to go. He was having a really good season with the Cubs and now he gets to go play on the playoff-bound dodgers.
Martin has had a lot of postseason success in his career. It has come as recently as the 2021 season when he won the World Series with the Atlanta Braves. Now, he is headed to the Dodgers who he helped beat last year. A deep playoff run feels inevitable in Los Angeles.
The Chicago Cubs have made their first trade of the trade deadline season.
In one day, Martin will go for pitching on a team with no postseason hopes whatsoever to the team that has one of the best chances of winning the National League right now. It is definitely good news for him.
In return for Martin, the Chicago Cubs are getting Zach McKinstry. He is a utility infielder and outfielder for the Dodgers at the MLB level right now. You’d think that the Cubs would be getting prospects but they opted for an MLB-ready player instead.
McKinstry is a 27-year-old man who has a few years left of control on him. The Cubs will see what they have in him as he gets his opportunity over the next few years. For Martin, it is better than a prospect that has little to no chance of making it. McKinstry at minimum has made it.
This certainly isn’t it for the Cubs. They have a lot more potentially moving parts that are sure to be gone by August 2nd which is only a couple of days away.
