The Chicago Blackhawks have been busy. They have already made quite a few trades that are going to make them worse on the ice in the present but make them better on the ice in the future. Another one of those might be on the horizon.

David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period is reporting that the Blackhawks are engaged with teams in discussions revolving around Patrick Kane. He also noted that the Dallas Stars are among the teams that are the most recently interested.

Would the Blackhawks make a trade like this? It is certainly possible as they don’t seem to have any interest in winning over the next few years. This is going to be a five-year rebuild as they try to tear it down and bring it back up.

Trading Kane will be a great way to gain assets for the future. The 2023 NHL Draft is loaded so you would expect them to land a first-round pick in that amongst many other great pieces for the future. The Stars (and others) are perfectly capable of paying a price like that.

The Chicago Blackhawks may or may not trade Patrick Kane before the season.

The Dallas Stars would be legit Stanley Cup contenders if they added someone like Kane. They are losing a very good defenseman in John Klingberg to free agency which isn’t ideal but that could be what is opening up the door for Kane and the lucrative contract that he brings. Even if the Hawks retain on some of his contract, they would still be paying a lot.

It would be tough to see Kane play for a division rival but if they present the best package they present the best package. It shouldn’t matter who it is that is getting Kane. He also only has one year left on his deal so anything can happen beyond that.

There is another benefit to trading Kane besides the cap space and the package that it would return. It would give the Blackhawks a great chance of being the worst team in the league. If there is a year to have this distinction, it is the 2022-23 season.

If Connor Bedard came to Chicago because they won the Draft Lottery, they might even be able to convince Kane to come back. That could be a moment that changes the franchise for the next ten years as he’s the real deal. It would be tough to see Kane go but it could be worth it.
