Willson Contreras is on the block as everyone knows right now. The Chicago Cubs are going to trade him before the trade deadline on August 2nd so now it is a matter of where.

The Chicago White Sox have three catchers on their roster right now. Yasmani Grandal was sensational in 2021 but he has been mostly mediocre or bad in 2022. They also have Reese McGuire and Seby Zavala who are fine at times but nobody would hate an upgrade.

Acting like the White Sox are just set at catcher is crazy. Grandal is perfectly capable of getting back to that level in 2022 but they shouldn’t bank on it.

They can also use Contreras (or Grandal) as a designated hitter in addition to using him in another position on the diamond. It is certainly something for both teams to think about. These three trades could get it done:

The Cubs and White Sox could work out a lot of deals for Willson Contreras.

The Chicago White Sox have a lot of stock in Yoelqui Cespedes. He is currently listed as their number four prospect and is a guy that could make it big in Major League Baseball one day. The Chicago Cubs would love to land a top prospect like this if they were getting Willson Contreras.

Gavin Sheets and Davis Martin have each had success in the early portions of their MLB careers up to this point. They have both been sent down and called back up at different points this season for different reasons but both of them have a future.

Anderson Severino has struggled in his little big league experience so far but he is a throw-in for a trade like this as the Cubs could still get something out of him if they spend the time in developing as many arms as possible. This would probably be a “low-end” version of a Willson Contreras trade.
