There is growing concern surrounding this Chicago Bears player
By Josh De Luca
Training camp is officially underway and there is no shortage of excitement. There are already headlines upon headlines but the biggest concern out of camp has to do with none other than Chicago Bears’ 2021 2nd round pick, Teven Jenkins.
Jenkins was seen as a first-round talent coming out of Oklahoma State but ended up falling to the Bears in the second round due to injury concerns. Jenkins eventually had back surgery in the offseason. He saw action in six games last season and only officially started two.
Currently, Jenkins looks to be competing with Larry Borom for the right tackle spot. This news comes shortly after the busy week from Ryan Poles as we saw him sign both Michael Schofield and Riley Reiff just days before camp.
These two signings put fans at ease as many were clamoring for another addition to the offensive line. However, these signings could mean bad news for Jenkins.
Things are getting very concerning for Chicago Bears OL Teven Jenkins.
It has already been rumored that the new Chicago Bears regime hasn’t been very fond of Jenkins thus far. This isn’t surprising considering that Jenkins wasn’t hand-picked by this staff.
This rumor really started to gain some steam during OTA’s earlier this summer when Jenkins was seen taking reps with the second team. Obviously, a player with first-round talent isn’t expected to be a backup going into his second season.
Normally, news out of OTA’s should be taken lightly since the season is still so far away and much can change. With that said, this news was still quite concerning considering both Larry Borom and 2022 5th round pick Braxton Jones were both getting first-team reps over Jenkins.
The Riley Reiff signing is what got most people thinking. To the majority, this move looked to be made because of the thin depth at tackle and the lack of trust in Jenkins.
Flashforward to today, the second day of training camp. It was reported by multiple insiders that Jenkins never made it out to the field for practice. There has still been no word as to why. Many are assuming it is another injury for him.
It’s almost as if everything that could’ve gone wrong for Jenkins has gone wrong. He is going to need to turn his career around quickly or the label “bust” will start getting thrown around. There is still hope that Jenkins can revive his career but right now, there is room for concern.
If the Jenkins selection doesn’t pan out, this should be a learning experience for the Bears, reminding them to take injury history more seriously in the pre-draft process.
