Trade Number 3: The Chicago Cubs deal Willson Contreras to the New York Mets

Finally, the New York Mets could offer the Cubs a package they cannot refuse. Let’s say that, when the deadline comes down to the wire, there’s a couple of teams bidding for Contreras. Well, the Mets are one of the better teams in baseball and certainly have the World Series on their mind. That’s why they’re one of the most oft-rumored teams to be a match for Contreras.

The competition to land Contreras would lead the Mets to give up a heft package in efforts to win it all. If the Mets were to be successful in that quest and win a championship, then it’s worth it. If not, then this would be one heck of a package lost for New York.

First, the Mets trade a top-100 prospect in shortstop Rony Mauricio. He is their number 3 prospect overall. New York has one of the best systems in the game right now, so they’re not even giving up one of their top two kids, but Mauricio is a phenomenal prospect nonetheless.

The 21-year-old Mauricio is a bit polarizing, because he stands 6-foot-3 and boasts a switch-hitting ability. He holds more natural power than some may originally think, but the man does stand out among others on the field. His size is noticeable. Still very raw, Mauricio needs to work more on taking walks and being smarter with his decisions at the plate. If he can improve there, he’ll be a heck of a Major League player.

Second, the Cubs get the Mets’ number 4 overall prospect, outfielder Alex Ramirez, who is also a top-100 prospect himself. Ramirez is another very raw prospect who will take some time, especially because of his long swing. The potential is there for Ramirez to become a great power hitter, but again, time will tell.
