Trade Number 2: The Chicago Cubs deal Willson Contreras to the San Francisco Giants

At the moment, it is now or never for the San Francisco Giants. The NL Wildcard race is paper thin, with a handful of teams gunning for a spot. Right now, the Giants are two games behind the final spot, currently held by the St. Louis Cardinals. Also in the race, just ahead of San Francisco, are the Philadelphia Phillies, who are just one game out of that final spot.

The Giants could end up making a move for Contreras, as well, and for the sake of this argument, they would give up a fairly decent haul for the All Star catcher.

First, the Cubs would luck out and get a top-100 prospect in the Giants’ no. 3 overall prospect, outfielder Luis Matos. The Giants’ farm system has a few in the top-100, so they’d be a heck of a trade partner for the Cubs.

Matos, though, is maybe the best overall hitter in the Giants’ system. He possesses big power and could evolve into a .300 hitter at the Major League level. He’s a year or so away from making his debut, so he would be ready fairly soon. Matos is also a great player in the field, having a high baseball IQ and great speed.

Second, the Cubs would get San Francisco’s number 7 overall prospect in catcher Patrick Bailey. The 23-year-old Bailey should be ready for a call-up within the next year, as well. He is a switch hitter who excels at using the whole field, and very well could end up being a 20-plus home run guy.
