3 shocking trades where the Chicago Cubs land a haul for Willson Contreras
By Ryan Heckman
Following the All Star Break, all eyes are now focused on the MLB trade deadline. Just as the Chicago Cubs have done in recent seasons, it appears they are going to once again be big-time sellers before the August 2 deadline passes.
At 38-57, the Cubs sport one of the worst records in baseball as we speak. The current situation is a situation that started to get created not far after they won the World Series in 2016. It seems as though, once the championship was won, the Ricketts were satisfied.
No longer did they want to spend big money on keeping their stars and attempting to keep the winning going.
This year is just another example of fans needing to move on from the World Series team, because the Cubs are certainly doing so. One of the biggest names on the trade market this summer is All Star catcher Willson Contreras, and he’s extremely likely to be dealt in the coming days.
As maybe the top trade candidate in baseball, the Chicago Cubs should get a solid return for Willson Contreras.
Contreras possesses a solid bat for any team looking for a catcher who can also connect. He’s always had that power to be a home run threat, as evidenced by his three career seasons with 20-plus in that department. This year, he’s got 14 and could very well end over 20 again.
There are a few teams that may be interested in acquiring Contreras. But, the tough question becomes, what could the Cubs get in return? Contreras is only controlled through this season, before becoming a free agent. So, he’s a rental for the rest of the year.
Maybe one of the following teams comes into focus and the Cubs are able to agree on a fairly strong return for their 3-time All Star.
