Trade Number 1: The Chicago White Sox deal for Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Jose Quintana

Once upon a time, Jose Quintana was a very familiar name with Chicago White Sox fans. And once upon a time, he was yet again a trade candidate, except with the Sox. Back in 2017, the Cubs completed a crosstown trade with the Sox in efforts to get back to their World Series form.

In that trade, the Cubs infamously sent prospects Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease to the South side. The Cubs never got back to their World Series ways, and the Sox ended up with two excellent players in return. Now, they could look to find help by bringing a back a familiar face in Quintana. With starting pitching being a need at the moment, Quintana would be a nice one-year rental.

Because Quintana would only be a rental for the rest of this season, the asking price couldn’t be much higher than a package like this. In return for Quintana, the Pittsburgh Pirates get a top-20 prospect and a top-30 prospect — the latter is more of a throw-in.

To start with, the Sox would give up right-handed pitcher Jason Bilous who is currently in AA ball, with a likely Major League call-up in 2023. According to the MLB prospect rankings, Bilous is the Sox no. 16 overall prospect.

Next up, the Sox would send Pittsburgh their no. 28 prospect Misael Gonzalez, an outfielder. Gonzalez has a projected debut in 2024, so he’s not far out at the moment.

Quintana has enjoyed a career resurgence this season with Pittsburgh, posting an ERA of 3.99 with 81 strikeouts in 90 innings pitched.
