The Chicago Cubs are going to unload a lot of their assets at this year’s trade deadline. They have some good players playing on this really bad team that can gain them some assets going forward. One of them is Willson Contreras.

Contreras was the starting catcher for the National League All-Stars this year which tells you everything you need to know about how good he is. With the rest of this season remaining on his contract, it is fair t assume that the Cubs are going to trade him away.

One team that makes sense for him is the San Diego Padres. These two teams have made trades before and would make perfect sense for a deal like this.

If the Cubs and Padres decided that they were good for this move, one of these three trade packages might be what it takes to get it done:

The Chicago Cubs could land a great catching prospect for Willson Contreras.

The trade is one for one. In this deal, the Chicago Cubs land the number two prospect in the San Diego Padres organization in a one-for-one deal with them. Contreras could sign long-term there with a really good team which would make trading Luis Campusano (also a catcher) worth it.

A catcher for catcher swap would be ideal for the Chicago Cubs as they are going to need someone that replaces Contreras in the not-so-distant future. If San Diego really wants to compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the division, a trade like this might be necessary.

He is the number 54 prospect in all of baseball so San Diego’s farm isn’t as stacked as some other teams but he is still good enough to be considered a solid return for Willson Contreras. If this deal got done, both sides might be happy.
