How did the Chicago players represent at the 2022 MLB All Star Game?
The 2022 MLB All-Star weekend has come and gone which brings the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox into the second half of their very different years. Both teams had two representatives in L.A. for the festivities. The Cubs were represented by starting catcher Willson Contreras and outfielder Ian Happ off the bench for the National League. The White Sox sent Tim Anderson to start at shortstop and Liam Hendricks for the American League bullpen.
All four players saw action on Tuesday night, and every one of them made solid impacts for their teams. Here is how each player fared:
Cubs
- Willson Contreras (five innings): 0/1, K, reached on error
- Ian Happ (four innings): No PA, BB
White Sox
- Tim Anderson (three innings): 1/2, groundout, single
- Liam Hendricks: 0.1 IP, 0 H, O R, 0 BB, 0 K
Contreras saw action in the first inning against A.L. starter Shane McClanahan. He struck out swinging but laced a foul ball into left field that was very well struck. Willson let out a big smile after that swing. In his next at bat Contreras reached on an error after he hit a hard grounder to Jose Ramirez, who could not handle it cleanly.
Ian Happ came in during the sixth inning, but only saw one at bat. He worked a walk in what was a very similar at bat to what Happ has been doing all season. He was patient, even after getting behind in the count against hard throwing lefty Gregory Soto. He remained in the game the rest of the way.
Tim Anderson did what he does best, get on base and flash the leather. He helped turn a gorgeous double play in the first inning with help from Andres Gimenez. He grounded out in his first at bat but laced a single to get on for his second and final plate appearance of the game.
Liam Hendricks came in to finish off the eighth inning and got one out, a loud flyout from Travis d’Arnaud. He was mic’d up during this at bat and put on a great show for the fans. He even screamed to make sure rookie Julio Rodriguez did not throw his ball into the stands after catching the fly out. Hendricks never fails to be a character.
Chicago was well represented by their respective All-Stars this season, and all players made good contributions for their teams. Both teams had snub candidates in Nico Hoerner and Dylan Cease, but those that did get in were class acts and enjoyed the moment of being among baseballs best. Hopefully it helped distract them from the seasons that their teams are going through so far.
