Chicago Bears’ Darnell Mooney utterly disrespected by Madden 23 ratings
By Ryan Heckman
Every year, fans look forward to the release of Madden ratings. Even the players love checking in on how the number one football video game views them. For Chicago Bears wide receiver Darnell Mooney, this year’s rating is one to look away from.
The initial Madden 23 ratings have the third-year pro listed as a 79 overall.
There is truly not enough time to dive into every single thing that is wrong with Mooney’s rating, but at first glance, it’s laughable.
When you dive into other receivers listed higher than Mooney, or even just above him, it gets just plain absurd. Mooney was absolutely disrespected in this year’s ratings, and he should be outraged, in fact.
Chicago Bears wideout Darnell Mooney was given one of the most inexplicably terrible Madden ratings of all-time.
At 79, Mooney is just below guys like Tyler Boyd (84), DeVante Parker (82), Sterling Shepard (82), Kendrick Bourne (81), A.J. Green (80) and Tim Patrick (80).
Let’s first look at Mooney’s 2021 season — catching passes from three different quarterbacks:
81 receptions for 1,055 yards and 4 touchdowns
All of these guys should be far below Mooney. Parker, for instance, finished last year with 40 receptions for 515 yards and just two touchdowns. He hasn’t topped the 1,000-yard mark in three years. Yet, Parker is rated above Mooney.
Green is on his way out of the NFL and is a shell of his former self. Shepard can hardly stay on the football field. Boyd and Patrick are underrated, but neither of them should be higher than Mooney as they are both WR3’s.
Now, let’s look at some of the guys way above Mooney.
Terry McLaurin is a 91 — 12 points higher than Mooney. Yet, Mooney finished with four more receptions and a couple more receiving yards. So, why the huge disparity? The disrespect is way too real.
DK Metcalf is an 89, yet finished with six less receptions and didn’t even break 1,000 yards last year.
For goodness sakes, Michael Thomas is a 90 and hasn’t played since the Stone Age.
There are also roughly 20 receivers rated higher than Mooney who caught fewer passes than he did a year ago. This type of blasphemy is unacceptable, but because it’s the Bears, Madden curators will not bat an eye.
It’s the Bears, so the blatant disrespect is not only fine, but it’s expected. As fans, we’ve come to know it all too well. Mooney should be fired up. He should be angry.
We can’t wait to see him take it out on the field in a couple of months.
