Why the Chicago Bears need to sign this RG before it’s too late
By Josh De Luca
The Chicago Bears are just like every other rebuilding team. They have a star, a few promising but unproven young players, and a lot of holes. The Bears have a few positions that could use some help but offensive line is now atop of that list. Specifically the right guard spot.
A few days ago you could’ve argued that wide receiver was the position that the Bears should address first. However, the Bears sent over a 2024 7th round draft choice to the New England Patriots in return for former first round selection N’Keal Harry.
This wasn’t a blockbuster trade by any means, but the Bears did address a position of need with a young, promising player who might’ve just needed a change of scenery. Fans had mixed feelings about the acquisition, but at the end of the day, most people were happy the Bears at least took action.
With the wide receiver room now a little more crowded, more people are looking towards the offensive line as the group that needs the most immediate help. This might be the case.
Coming into this offseason, the offensive line was very concerning to say the least. The Bears did make some minor additions, most notably signing veteran guard Dakota Dozier. Right away Dozier was expected to compete for he right guard spot.
However, Dozier was carted off the field with a supposed leg injury during minicamp. This leaves the Bears right back at square one.
Currently, Sam Mustipher has slid over into the right guard spot and has been taking the first team reps. Mustipher could end up staying there, but that would take a big blow to the depth since Mustipher can backup both the center and guard spots in case of emergency.
At this point in the offseason, the options left to fill that right guard spot are slim. There are only a few solid veterans left, and the longer the Bears wait, the worse of a position they are putting themselves in.
The best guard left in free agency is veteran Quinton Spain. Spain played last season on the Cincinnati Bengals, where he started 16 games in the regular season, as well as all 4 playoff games.
The Chicago bears have a serious problem up front, and need to move fast before their options are gone.
Spain is the perfect signing for multiple reasons. First, Spain brings another veteran leader into the offensive line room that the Bears desperately need. The majority of the Bears offensive line room are in their early to mid twenties, and very unexperienced. Spain would bring leadership and mentorship day one.
However, the biggest reason why Spain would be a great addition would be his versatility. In Spain’s 8 year career, he has played on 3 different teams, even once splitting a season between the Bills and the Bengals.
This is a positive because Spain has played and adapted to multiple playbooks and schemes and odds are, would be able to jump right in and play without needing much time to adapt.
Lastly, Spain graded out quite well last season, earning a PFF grade of 72.3. Although the Bengals offensive line as a whole wasn’t good last season, Spain quietly put together a productive season protecting second year breakout, Joe Burrow.
With training camp starting around the league, injuries are a yearly occurrence. If the Bears don’t make a move on Spain, another needy team will.
