3 burning questions that Chicago Bears training camp must answer
By Ryan Heckman
Which wide receiver will emerge as the second real threat on the Chicago Bears offense?
Piggybacking off the last question, Fields obviously cannot do it all on his own. Sure, he needs to step up and make those around him better. But, other than Mooney, he’ll need help from a second receiving option. Chemistry in training camp will be the biggest thing to watch when it comes to seeing which second wide receiver steps into a prominent role.
Last year, it was Mooney who developed chemistry with Fields right off the bat. Thus, Fields trusted Mooney as more of his number one option, even over veteran Allen Robinson. This summer, he’ll have a whole lot of options to choose from in terms of whom he trusts most.
Will it be another young guy like rookie third rounder Velus Jones Jr.? It very well could be. Fields likes the speedy guys. He loves the big play, and Jones can fly.
Byron Pringle was living in the shadows in Kansas City, mostly behind Tyreek Hill, Mecole Hardman and sometimes Demarcus Robinson. But, when he had his chances, Pringle proved he could make the big play as well.
Chicago also has veteran journeymen like Dante Pettis and Tajae Sharpe, along with Equanimeous St. Brown and the recently-arrested David Moore. Who knows what happens with the latter, but St. Brown could be a sneaky play.
Nonetheless, it will be a battle to watch. Everybody is going to be playing for a significant role behind Mooney. Who takes it?
