Is Justin Fields good enough to make the Chicago Bears offense better?

Coming out of Ohio State, we knew the pedigree that Justin Fields brought with him to the NFL. Being the most accurate quarterback on deep passes that Pro Football Focus had graded since 2014, boasting that 4.39 speed and a strong, chiseled frame, Fields had all of the physical traits.

As a rookie, we saw plenty of growing pains; some of them his fault, and others were squarely on Matt Nagy. But, in year two, Fields now has an offensive system that plays to his strengths. That’s the first step in developing a guy like Fields. Secondly, though, is to surround a young quarterback with talent.

The Bears haven’t exactly nailed that aspect of his development. So, the big question is, will Fields be good enough to elevate those around him? Quarterbacks like Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Drew Brees were generational talents because they were able to work with any weapons. Sure, they had their share of talented receivers. But, they were also able to make the no-name guys relevant.

Can Fields be good enough to do that? He has no choice at this point, because his best receiving threat is third-year pro Darnell Mooney. Now, Mooney is a great talent. But, beyond him, the Bears hardly have proven talent at receiver. They’re depending on a breakout from tight end Cole Kmet and a strong running game from David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert.

If Fields is as good as we think he is, he’ll be able to elevate talent around him, and it begins in training camp.
