Offensive line is going to be one of the most-watched battles in Chicago Bears training camp

When the offseason began, offensive line was arguably the biggest need for this Bears roster. The feeling around this team has been that, if they are going to have success in the near future, then Justin Fields is going to have to be great.

While that is a fair assessment, he cannot do it alone, nor can he do it while unprotected. As Poles got into the thick of the offseason, he added one clear-cut starter to the line in center Lucas Patrick. Patrick and Cody Whitehair seem to be the only two offensive linemen cemented in their starting positions.

Now, that statement is a little scary at first. However, the Bears do have another concrete starting lineman in last year’s second rounder, Teven Jenkins. But, the interesting aspect of Jenkins’ immediate future comes when figuring out where he fits best. Will it be right tackle? Will he be moved inside to guard? Jenkins looks like he’ll end up being a solid lineman, but figuring out his spot is the real question.

As for the other two starting spots, it’s going to come down to a few names. Second-year pro Larry Borom could end up starting at a tackle spot. But, this year’s fifth-round pick, Braxton Jones, has been getting a lot of buzz and could give Borom a run for his money.

Still, the Bears have Sam Mustipher who could start on the inside if the Bears chose to go with a combination of Jenkins, Borom or Jones at tackle.

The best overall combination might be moving Jenkins inside, while starting Borom and Jones at tackle. But, that’s why training camp matters so much. The next few weeks will provide a lot of clarity within this group, and hopefully, the best five linemen find their way into the starting lineup.
