Chicago Blackhawks should continue their tear down during the 2022 NHL Draft
By Todd Welter
In this instance, there is nothing wrong with the Chicago Blackhawks tanking.
The prize for the team that wins the 2023 NHL Lottery is Connor Bedard. He is a generational talent that can move a franchise toward Stanley Cup contention.
While tanking is not fun to watch, the Blackhawks are so far away from even sneaking into the playoffs. The reward for tanking next season is to get the best odds possible of winning the draft lottery could be worth all the losing.
Losing the most games does not necessarily mean the Chicago Blackhawks will walk away with the number one pick. Remember in 2008, the Hawks only had the seventh-best odds and ended up landing the top pick to draft Kane. Then again, the Montreal Canadiens cashed in by finishing dead last and won this year’s draft lottery.
Plus, the Chicago Blackhawks have so many holes on their roster that they could use as many picks as possible in this year’s draft along with next year’s draft.
The Chicago Blackhawks could use more prospects at pretty much every position on the ice. They have Lukas Reichel who has star potential and goalie Arvid Söderblom possesses great size to be a wall in goal. They still need to restock the farm system as it has been ranked as low as 28th in the NHL.
If the Chicago Blackhawks are going to do this rebuild correctly, they need to get as many talented prospects as they can get–and sign them. It can all start by continuing the tear down and building up from scratch.
