Mattias Havelid

The Chicago Blackhawks may look at an offensive defenseman in the 2nd round.

The Chicago Blackhawks haven’t had an elite defensive core in a long time. The days of Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Niklas Hjalmarsson, and Johnny Oduya are long gone. Now, they have Seth Jones who is amazing but his contract is going to be a bad one for a long time.

They have drafted a lot of big defensive defensemen over the last few years but now they might want to consider drafting a smaller offensive defenseman. Adam Boqvist didn’t work out for them as that was a terrible pick. However, they can try to get it right with Mattias Havelid.

Havelid comes from Sweden where he became a right-handed defenseman that is known for his offensive capabilities. He is someone that can use his skills on the power play to be the quarterback which is something that every team in the league can use. He also knows how to gain the offensive zone and make the right decision once he is in.

Havelid has a twin brother that is also going to be drafted. He is a goalie so it might be a while after Mattias is selected before we hear his brother Hugo’s name called. Expect Mattias to be called somewhere in the second round.

Obviously, there are a lot of things that Kyle Davidson can do with these second-round picks. However, if he does decide to use them on entry-level players, these three would be a great fit. There are also a lot of other picks that would make sense as well. This is going to be interesting to see.
