3 trade packages that send Willson Contreras to Boston Red Sox

Willson Contreras could land the Chicago Cubs a couple of MLB-ready players.

The Chicago Cubs are going to be a bad team for the rest of the 2022 season. They will get even worse if they trade guys like Willson Contreras, Ian Happ, and Kyle Hendricks amongst others. Another 100-loss season could be on the horizon.

However, it doesn’t have to last for a long time. They are going to have a lot of financial flexibility after this year is over and the free-agent class is rather nice. They should be able to land one of the big shortstops out there along with a few other really good players.

Combine that with some of the good young players that they already have and they could make some noise in a somewhat weak NL Central Division. For that reason, they could look for some MLB-ready talent in a Willson Contreras trade.

Christian Vasquez could replace Contreras as the catcher as they are around the same age. Franchy Cordero is a 27-year-old kid looking to make his mark long-term with an MLB team and the Cubs could do that for him.

Both of those guys may be able to help Chicago next season and beyond. It would hinge on them getting other good players during the offseason but that kind of sounds like the plan for the Cubus anyway. That is why they might as well try to get something for Contreras.

Matthew Lugo is a nice prospect to ask for as well. He is Boston’s number 12 guy. The shortstop was drafted in the second round of the 2019 MLB Draft. With three shortstops ahead of him in Boston’s prospect system (this doesn’t include Bogaerts or Story), he might be better served somewhere else.

With Willson Contreras’s contract coming to an end, it seems as if the 2016 World Series team is just about all gone. It is a sad time for Cubs fans but in order to build the next great Cubs team, they need to make some of these changes with the present and future in mind.
