9 great options to replace Tony La Russa as White Sox manager
By Todd Welter
Could Jim Leyland be considered by Jerry Reinsdorf for the Chicago White Sox?
It probably will not happen but then again no one thought Tony La Russa being rehired would take place. That is why it would not be shocking if Jerry asks Rick Hahn to bring in Leyland.
Before Leyland kicked off his legendary manager career, he was the Chicago White Sox third base coach under La Russa. He is someone Reinsdorf has pursued twice in the 1990s to be the White Sox manager.
Reinsdorf tried to pry him away from the Pittsburgh Pirates after the 1991 season to replace Jeff Torborg. The Pirates blocked the move.
Jerry tried again after the 1996 season to bring Leyland back to the Southside. He pursued Leyland while he still had Terry Bevington under contract as manager. Leyland decided to take the Florida Marlins job and won the World Series in 1997.
Reinsdorf could be tempted to try again to get his man before Jerry passes away. The La Russa hiring was all about fixing a regret. Jerry might decide he wants to see his beloved White Sox managed by another person he has held in high regard.
Leyland has a winning pedigree with over 1700 wins, a World Series ring, two American League Championships, and three Manager of the Year awards. Only the Hall of Fame is missing from his credentials.
Leyland left managing in 2013 but his players praised how the old school manager could relate so well to them. Leyland has a pretty good post-managing gig with the Detroit Tigers so he will probably stay retired.
It should not come as a shocker if Reinsdorf thinks about making one more run at Leyland if La Russa retires at the end of the season.
