9 great options to replace Tony La Russa as White Sox manager
By Todd Welter
Willie Harris could be a good choice for the Chicago White Sox manager job.
Willie Harris scored the most famous run in White Sox history when he crossed home plate in the 8th inning during Game 4 of the 2005 World Series. The Sox went on to beat the Houston Astros 1-0 to win the franchise’s first World Series in 88 years.
Harris is now on the Northside serving as the Chicago Cubs’ third-base coach. Harris was considered for the Sox manager job in 2020 before Reinsdorf went with La Russa. Harris has the credentials and ties to the franchise that would make him attractive to replace Tony long-term.
Harris was a minor league manager for the White Sox Single-A affiliate and the San Francisco Giants Double-A team. He is very popular among the Cubs’ players so winning over a clubhouse should not be a problem.
"“I’m a players type of guy,” he said. “I’m that guy that can share my experiences with players who are struggling. I understand when things are going well for them. I understand how they are feeling. I am the guy that is willing to talk to the player, call him into the office, and just talk, not just about baseball.”"
Harris would also bring some personality to the manager role.
Imagine the Chicago White Sox having a manager who is tuned in with today’s ballplayers and trying to grow the game. The only thing Harris would have to prove is handling a Major League bullpen. With his experience and personality, it would be worth finding out.
