The Chicago White Sox could consider an interim manager in 2022 if they wanted.

If the Chicago White Sox continues to struggle against teams that are not the Detroit Tigers, maybe La Russa will start his second retirement early. Again, it is highly unlikely Tony is fired but maybe he will decide he does not want to tarnish his legacy any more than he already has during this second stint as White Sox manager.

The candidate that would make the most sense to manage out the rest of the season is current White Sox bench coach Miguel Cairo. Cairo has already served as the interim manager for one game last season. He was in charge of the Sox for the Field of Dreams game against the New York Yankees while La Russa attended his brother-in-law’s funeral.

Cairo is 48 and has some front office experience after his playing days. He should be familiar with the relationship dynamic between the manager and the personal department (something it seems La Russa has not fully grasped).

If the Sox want to go with someone who has managing experience, Major League Instructor coach Jerry Narron could slide into the interim role. Narron managed the Texas Rangers and the Cincinnati Reds back in the 2000s. La Russa typically leans on Narron for counsel more than Cairo.

If Narron is helping La Russa make some of these questionable decisions, maybe Cairo would be the better fit. Neither choice is ideal but could be good enough to get the Sox through the rest of the season if La Russa chooses to step down.
