2. Trading Khalil Mack

The Chicago Bears traded Khalil Mack this offseason which really helps.

Trading for former defensive player of the year Khalil Mack shifted the Bears’ direction from a rebuilding team to playoff-bound back in 2018.

Trading Mack away did the opposite. It was the biggest catalyst in igniting the rebuild that this team desperately needed.

Mack’s stint in Chicago gave Bears fans some of the most memorable moments in recent history.  However, it just didn’t make sense to keep him on the roster at the cap number he was owed.

They weren’t competing with him so the best move for their long-term success was to get something in return while they could.

That’s exactly what Ryan Poles did. Getting a 2nd rounder for a 31-year-old edge rusher coming off an injury is as shrewd as it gets.

Sure, they had to eat a lot of Mack’s remaining guaranteed money to move him but this season was the time to do that.

The pick they received from the trade turned into former Penn State safety Jaquan Brisker. A young, cheap, and intriguing safety for an aging expensive edge rusher sounds like a win given where the Bears are at.

Poles most likely has another position that needs to be addressed down the line with Mack’s departure. Hopefully, he can find a younger player that fits their timeline to be the Bears’ next game wrecker.
