4. Trusting their board

The Chicago Bears trusted their board at the 2022 NFL Draft which is smart.

Many were critical of the Bears for attacking their defense with their first two picks of the 2022 NFL draft.

It was assumed that those selections would be used to help Justin Fields and the offense. However, Poles and his staff stayed true to their board and took the BPA.

While you might’ve disagreed with their actual valuations on some of the offensive players they passed on for Kyler Gordon and Jaquan Brisker, staying true to the board is always a good process.

Football is a noisy game full of unknowns and randomness. Positions that aren’t considered a “need” can completely fall off because of injuries or decline.

In other words, there is really no such thing as “positions of need” because of so many changes during the season. The most important aspect is acquiring good players.

In addition, the draft is random. So, just because a position is attacked with a draft pick doesn’t mean it will pan out. That is even more true when reaching for players.

Lastly, It’s not like the secondary wasn’t a huge need for this team and isn’t a valuable position group.

Kindle Vildor and Teez Tabor were starters last season! Some of the Bears’ losses came at the feet of their secondary in 2021.

The offense undoubtedly needs more work, yet the Bears played the draft the right way. Staying true to the board will always lead to better results more times than not.
