Trading Willson Contreras might be hard but the Cubs can do well if they do.

The Chicago Cubs, as mentioned before, are rebuilding. It is insulting that Jed Hoyer thinks the fans can’t see that but it is what it is. You don’t trade Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Javier Baez, and Willson Contreras and claim you are doing anything other than rebuilding.

If you do take that route, as the Cubs are, you should get really good prospects in return. That has been the case so far and Contreras could land them even more really good players. That could also be extra true if the trade comes with the New York Mets who will do anything at this point to win.

This trade has the Cubs getting two players who are very far apart in their development. Ronny Mauricio is someone that is close to being a Major League Baseball player. He is listed as New York’s number three prospect and the number 66 guy in the whole league. At 21 years old, he is in AA and has an MLB ETA of 2023.

As for Alex Ramirez, he is only 19 and playing in A ball. The Mets clearly think highly of this kid as his ETA sits at 2024, despite being two years younger than Mauricio. He is New York’s number four prospect.

As we say with every trade think piece, we don’t know for sure if he will be moved or not. However, it does seem obvious that he is going to. If the Cubs get returns like the ones listed here, it will turn out to be a good thing that they did it.
