The Chicago Cubs could land another catcher in a trade for Willson Contreras.

The New York Mets are a team that is loading up to go for the World Series in 2022. Their owner, Steve Cohen, is very rich and is willing to do whatever it takes to try and win. He will allow trades of whoever and money spent wherever if he believes it will help them win.

They are one of the few teams who have a catcher as their number one prospect. The Mets wouldn’t need him anymore if Willson Contreras landed there long-term. That could very well happen if the Cubs traded him to the Mets in exchange for Francisco Alvarez.

James McCann is on the Injured List right now. They use Tomas Nido and Patrick Mazeika in his place but it isn’t like McCann is all that great either. The Mets thought that they were getting Chicago White Sox McCann and they mostly haven’t.

If they don’t land a starting catcher for the long term via trade or free agency, they could try to keep developing Alvarez for that role. It very well could (and should) work out for him but will he be ready in this window for the Mets?

That remains to be seen but Willson Contreras surely will. The Cubs would also be getting Contreras’ long-term replacement in a deal like this which could make it one of those trades that works out well for both teams.
