Chicago Bears GM Ryan Poles’ drafting of Velus Jones Jr. will be questionable until proven otherwise

Going into the 2022 NFL Draft, just about anyone with an interest in the Bears, or football in general, would have told you that Chicago was extremely likely to select a wide receiver in the second round. When Poles selected defensive backs Kyler Gordon and Jaquan Brisker, most of those same people were very surprised.

They weren’t bad picks, by any means, and should immediately fortify what was a significant weakness last season.

From there, the Bears had some great options at wide receiver in the third round. Jalen Tolbert, David Bell and Romeo Doubs were all still on the board. Maybe one of those three picks would have been a better overall player than Velus Jones Jr. at pick 71, or maybe not.

Jones’ biggest knocks are that he’s a 25-year-old rookie and only had one full season of production at wide receiver. For him to become part of a rebuilding team like the Bears was a head-scratcher to many out there.

Now, Jones’ skillet is electric and he will provide some big plays in Chicago’s offense. He also seems to love working with Justin Fields. But, it remains to be seen whether or not Poles’ selection was the smart move or not.
