Why Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields will improve in 2022, despite doubts
By Todd Welter
Coaching and a scheme fit to Fields’ strengths will do wonders.
Even though Luke Getsy is in his first year as offensive coordinator, it cannot be discounted that he is already focusing on building up Fields fundamentally. It feels like he has an actual plan to develop Fields into a franchise quarterback. The previous regime had a vague plan of having Fields sit all season and learn from Andy Dalton.
That is why Getsy is now the offensive coordinator and Eberflus is the head coach.
The plan sounds like it starts with mastering quarterback fundamentals and the concepts of the offense. Fields needs to be competent in those areas first.
In addition, it sounds like Getsy is going to use bootlegs to get Fields out of the pocket to get the ball down the field. That will go a long way in helping the offense line and also take advantage of Fields running ability.
Fields’ quarterback coach has offensive line coaching experience. That will go a long way in helping Fields understand the game from an offensive lineman perspective. That is important because he can understand his protection better.
The Bears will be running an offense similar to the Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers, and the Green Bay Packers. That means getting the ball out quick, slant routes, screen passes, and an offense that is quarterback friendly–unlike the previous Chicago Bears’ offense.
All Fields is being asked is to get better at running the offense.
Once he gets better at doing that, the Chicago Bears can then go into the next offseason with loads of cap space to get him more weapons.
