It is time for the Chicago Blackhawks to consider moving Jonathan Toews.

The Chicago Blackhawks have had some amazing moments with their captain, Jonathan Toews. They took him with the third overall pick in the 2006 NHL Draft and haven’t looked back since. If that draft were redone, the St. Louis Blues would take him first.

He is one of the most special players that the Hawks have ever had. He was the captain from a young age and developed into a truly elite top-line centerman. There was a lot of team and individual success that came as a result of his amazing play.

Throughout his career, he has won a lot. On a team level, the Hawks won three Stanley Cups and Gary Bettman has handed him the Cup as the captain all three times. For one of those championships, Toews was the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as the MVP of the playoffs.

Toews has also won the Selke Trophy, the Mark Messier Leadership Award, and has been an All-Star. There is no doubt that he will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer because of all these achievements. Unfortunately, it is time for the team to move on.

Toews has one more year making 10.5 million dollars against the salary cap. That is a lot of money for a guy who isn’t nearly as productive as he once was. It might be hard to find someone to take him on but nothing is off the table.

A championship-caliber team might be fine paying that (maybe with some retained salary) for a guy that can bring leadership and decent play for one year. In order for the Hawks to rebuild properly, getting something for him might be worth a try.
