3 players that the Chicago Bears can still add for depth
By Josh De Luca
The Chicago Bears could still use some more help with their linebacker room.
1. Joe Schobert
Coach Eberflus is heading into his first season as the defensive-minded head coach of the Bears. There is nothing that Eberflus needs more than a sure-tackling, smart veteran to help anchor the second level of the defense.
At the moment, young star Roquan Smith is already doing a great job in that role. However, besides Smith, there isn’t as much depth and experience in the linebacker room as the Bears would like.
Currently, the depth behind Smith consists of NFL journeyman Joe Thomas and Caleb Johnson along with a young unproven player from Houston Baptist. It’s hard to say that anybody would be comfortable with either of those players getting significant playing time on Sundays.
Joe Schobert would immediately add experience and veteran leadership to a young linebacker room. Schobert spent last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers where he racked up 112 tackles, 6 pass deflections, 1 interception, and 1 forced fumble.
That type of production isn’t new either. Back in 2017, Schobert led the NFL in tackles with 144 and was a Pro Bowl selection. It would be unlikely that Schobert puts up numbers like this again anywhere he lands but there is definitely no harm in trying to bring Joe to Chicago.
