5 fears or frustrations Chicago Bears fans will always have
By Todd Welter
The McCaskey’s will never learn how to run a football team.
The McCaskey family has owned the Chicago Bears even since team patriarch George Halas passed away in 1983. His daughter Virginia McCaskey and her family have overseen a generation of futility.
The Bears are 312-293 since October 31st, 1983 the day Halas passed away. 30-percent of those wins came right after the McCaskey family took over in 1991. That was due in a large part to the talent acquired by general manager Jim Finks and then by Ditka. All that collection of talent was capped off by the 1985 Bears that won the Super Bowl.
After 1991, the Bears have gone to the Super Bowl once and lost. They have won just five division championships and had seven playoff appearances.
The McCaskey’s might have a winning record but the Bears are rarely in the playoff picture under the stewardship.
Mike McCaskey once hired a head coach without having a deal in place. That led to him being removed as the team president and CEO.
Current team chairman George McCaskey has gone through four head coaches and three general managers. His family’s source of making them billionaires is owning the Bears. You would think George McCaskey would be well versed in football.
Wrong!
McCaskey has admitted he is just a fan. Being just a fan would be okay if he was not tasked with having the final say on who the Bears’ general manager is. That is kind of a major decision that someone with some football knowledge should be making and not a superfan.
The McCaskey’s have been a source of fear and frustration for Bears fans for over 30 years. The hope is Poles, Eberflus, and Fields can succeed to ease that tension. History has shown that is not the case for the Chicago Bears. Let’s hope history stops repeating itself.
