3 things to know about new Chicago Bears WR Dante Pettis

2. New Chicago Bears WR Dante Pettis fits a similar mold to Velus Jones Jr.
When the Bears drafted Velus Jones Jr. this year, they got someone special. Jones is not just a wide receiver, but a return specialist as well. Coming out of college, Pettis had nine career punt returns for a touchdown, which was good for an NCAA record.
He was an electric return man. In his final season at Washington, Pettis averaged over 20 yards per punt return.
Pettis was also dangerous in the open field while at Washington. He has even flashed some of that as a pro, albeit with limited playing time. When he is able to get some space, his skill set allows him to take it to the house on a moment’s notice.
It is no wonder this new Bears regime decided to take a chance on him. He fits what head coach Matt Eberflus wants in a player, athletically-speaking. His speed and elusiveness make him an attractive asset, and the Bears would be fortunate to see his career finally take off.
If Pettis were to make the final roster, some formation including he and Jones could make for an interesting play call. With both of their speed on the field at the same time, and maybe along with Mooney, quarterback Justin Fields could have some fun.
