The Chicago Cubs paid a hefty price in their Monday night win
The Chicago Cubs are a very bad baseball team. However, they are going to win sometimes and they did just that on Monday night. They defeated the San Diego Padres on the west coast to earn their first win in a long time. It was a wild game but they paid a price for the victory.
In the win, Seiya Suzuki hurt himself. He had a hit and an RBI contributing to the win (it kicked off Chicago’s scoring) before his departure but it is still a huge loss. He has right ankle soreness that apparently occurred when he tried to beat out a double play in the fifth inning.
Kyle Hendricks pitched a gem in this game. With a long losing streak, they needed their ace to stop the bleeding with a very good team on the other side. He went 8.2 innings and came just one out away from the complete game. Scott Efross came in and got the final out of the game.
In those 8.2 innings, Hendricks gave up just three hits, one walk, and had seven strikeouts. It was a brilliant performance that he needed to have badly. It helped the Cubs earn the 6-0 shutout victory.
The Chicago Cubs need to hope that Seiya Suzuki returns in short order.
Suzuki’s potential injury update will keep Cubs fans up at night thinking about it. It doesn’t sound like it is too terrible but this team needs him back as soon as possible. They are already a struggling team so taking out their best hitter (up to this point) wouldn’t help them much.
The Cubs have two more with the San Diego Padres here on Tuesday and Wednesday. Wade Miley hasn’t pitched yet this season and is expected to get the start for the Cubs on Tuesday. He will face Mike Clevinger. Without Suzuki, this is going to be a very tough task.
What would the Cubs be losing if they lose him for an extended period of time? Well, for one, they’d be losing quality at-bats on a nightly basis. He has patient but also aggressive if that makes sense. He waits for good pitches and attacks them when they’re there. Hopefully, it isn’t bad (it doesn’t sound like it is) and he gets back as soon as possible.
