Cole Kmet must step up for the Chicago Bears in 2022

On an offense without a ton of weapons, third-year tight end Cole Kmet is going to have to make a leap. Over the first couple of years, Kmet has been hit and miss in terms of his production and consistency. He’s had some drop issues at times and must put those to rest in 2022.

Two years ago, Kmet was the top tight end in his draft class, which is why the Bears took him at pick no. 43 — their first selection in that 2020 draft. His rookie year, Kmet was rarely used and caught just 28 passes. Last season, though, Kmet totaled 60 receptions for 612 yards. If new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy is correct, then Kmet could have a breakout season in 2022.

For a second-year quarterback like Justin Fields, Kmet could end up playing a crucial role. He’s going to be on the field a lot, and ideally Kmet will be a security blanket type of player for Fields.

Kmet might have no choice but to become a big option in this offense, and with one year under his belt with Fields, he is one of the prime candidates to do so. The Bears could use a season along the lines of 80 receptions for 850 yards and six touchdowns out of Kmet. If they were to get that type of jump, then Fields and the entire offense will truly have taken a step forward.
